Government agencies have increased the purchase of wheat this year vigorously but the stock of wheat in government warehouses by the first May of this year is lower than the previous year despite the increase in government purchases.

Wheat stock is about 37 lakh tonnes lower than last year by May.
According to the first May in the central pool this year, only 277.05 lakh tonnes of wheat stock have been recorded in the central pool, while over the past year, 314.45 lakh tonnes of wheat were purchased in the central pool.
While government purchases have increased vigorously during May, wheat stock status can be satisfactory in the current situation.
Last year the production was low and government agencies had bought low amounts of wheat from farmers, only 230 lakh tonnes of wheat were bought,
Low procurement resulted in low wheat stock while the government had increased wheat harvesting from stock due to the current season 2017-18 in the central pool.
Over stock was just 80 million tonnes, while the last year the carry over stock was over 145 million tonnes.
Wheat stock reduction has been recorded by the first May only because of the previous stock reduction at the time of commencement of 2017-18 season.
